When you look into a mirror and you see yourself with a frown, you don’t go over to the mirror and try to force the reflection to smile. If you want to see the reflection smile, you must smile first. There is no way to change the reflection without you smiling first. We understand that when you decide to smile the reflection has no choice but to return the smile. So, reality is very much like a mirror; it will not change until you change first, but if you do, it has no choice but to follow.

You cannot expect the people and the circumstances that surround you to change unless you yourself change first. If you are negative you will be surrounded by negativity. If you are positive you will be surrounded with positivity. When you smile at someone, don’t they usually return the smile? Goodness and kindness always come back to you.

And when you laugh, don’t the people around you laugh too?

Much has been said about how Facebook causes unhappiness, something I strongly disagree with. If you’re unhappy, it’s not because of Facebook. Give these ten ways to find happiness on Facebook a try, and see how it works for you:

1. Be happy for others.

The number one cause for Facebook unhappiness that people cite comes from comparing themselves to others. For example: your news feed is filled with happy announcements, photos of parties and traveling and your friends’ good fortunes- and this is supposed to make you feel bad about yourself. Instead, why not try being happy for them? Look at these things and be happy that your friends are enjoying so many blessings in life, and are not afraid to share it with the world. Then click on “Like”. Because you do.

2. Start (or join) a private group.

My very own Happiness Challenge was started on Facebook, where it still thrives. For thirty days, I shared photos of things that made me happy, shared it with everyone on my friends list- then created a private group for those who were interested in continuing on with me. There’s something about private groups, as opposed to pages- it feels a lot more intimate, like having an ongoing dinner party with carefully chosen people. Find a group that shares your interests, or start your own.

3. Subscribe to happy and inspirational pages.

Fill your personal news feed with happy and inspirational posts. You can start with the Happy Dose page, where I repost some of my favorite finds from other Facebook pages, and ComedyDose, which is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every day.

4. Fine-tune your privacy settings.

Yes, harassment and negativity happens on Facebook. Some of my best friends have left Facebook because of these. The answer? Tweaking your privacy settings. Facebook allows you to do this, and it’s actually quite easy. Here’s a quick guide from Tech News World:

Step 1: Set General Privacy Settings
Click on the Settings cogwheel-like icon at the top-right corner of your Facebook page. Use a Web browser on a computer for this — it’s easier.
Choose the Privacy Settings link in the drop-down menu, and click on the first Edit link labeled “Who can see your future posts?” Select the “Friends” choice.
This setting will limit the viewing of your posts to friends, and not friends of friends.
Tip: Your About tab on your Timeline is where your current city is stored.

Step 2: Review and Remove Posts and Tagged Items
Click on the Use Activity Log link adjacent to “Review all your posts and things that you’re tagged in.” It’s in the same Settings area you visited in Step 1.
Scroll down the page and you’ll see chronological activity that relates to you — either instigated by you or by others. Click on the Edit icon to the right of the activity.
In the case of content uploaded by you — like photos — choose Delete Photo.
Warning: Photos that are untagged but not deleted can still be found by others on Facebook. Hiding a photo from your Timeline doesn’t change who can see the photo.
Tip: Use the Shared With and On Timeline filters in the Photos section of the Activity Log to see items you’ve hidden from your timeline but that still might be viewable by others.
Use the Report/Remove Tag option within the Edit area to request photos be removed by friends. Choose “I Want this photo removed from Facebook” and a message will be sent to the owner requesting it be removed. Use this option for requesting an un-tag in the Posts You’re Tagged In section too.

Step 3: Limit Past Posts to Friends Only
Click on the link adjacent to “Limit the audience for posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or Public.” Choose to limit old posts to friends — not friends of friends and not public.

5. Never fight on Facebook.

We’ve all seen this: couples, friends, acquaintances fighting publicly. I once watched a married couple log in to each other’s accounts to write nasty things about “themselves” and attack each other’s friends. Ouch. Don’t do it, however tempting it may be. It is never appropriate.

6. Be considerate of others.

Remember that behind every friend on Facebook is a real flesh and blood human being. I think if we treated our online interactions more like our real-life ones, the internet would be a happier place. I’ve seen people attack each other on timelines, writing disparaging comments or leaving thinly veiled insults. Through healthy discussion you can make one another think, but it’s important to remember that you aren’t there to change anyone’s mind.

7. Don’t worry if nobody “likes” your posts.

Just because nobody “likes” your posts, doesn’t mean that nobody likes your posts. Don’t worry so much how many “likes” you get, and just post from your heart.

8. Care.

Greet friends on their birthdays. Congratulate your buddy on his new baby. Send a congratulatory message to a friend for her promotion at work. Pay attention to what people post- these things are what’s important to them. When you come across something you think they might like, share it with them.

9. Unsubscribe from unhappy people.

Some people are just negative- it doesn’t mean they’re bad people, and the venting they do may in fact be very helpful to them. That doesn’t mean you have to see it all the time. Here are Facebook’s instructions on how to unfollow someone:

There are two ways to unfollow a person:

Go to that person’s timeline. From there, hover your mouse over the Following button and click Unfollow. If you’re friends with that person, hover over the Friends button and uncheck Show in News Feed.

You can also unfollow them by clicking next to a post you see in your news feed and selecting Unfollow.

10. Embrace the experience.

There’s never been anything quite like Facebook- and, although it might seem like it’s been around forever, it’s still very much in its infancy. But here’s the thing: remember why you joined Facebook in the first place? In my case, it was to reconnect with friends from my past, and stay updated on friends in the present- and, when you strip all of the extras away- the games and the apps and the ads and pages- that’s what Facebook does, and what it does better than any other social network.
